Karen Montanaro married Tony Montanaro in 1989. Since that time and right up until Tony's death in December 2002, Tony and Karen toured and taught and did everything together. Karen was the ghost writer
for Tony's book, "Mime Spoken Here," published in 1995.

Prior to meeting Tony, Karen had been a professional ballet dancer with the Ohio Ballet and the Darmstadt Opera Ballet in Germany. Her work with Tony drew on the discipline and technique of both ballet and mime and originated a third art form, a unique fusion of both mime and dance.

Karen teaches her husband's method of mime, improvisation, and movement and performs her one-woman show Tanzspiel (German for "dance play") that Tony co-wrote and directed.

She is currently on the faculty at the Portland School of Ballet and performs with its affiliated company, the Portland Ballet.
