Self with Others
July 28, 2014 - August 2, 2014
John Britton (5 Days)
Self-With-Others is a comprehensive, rigorous, pleasure-based training for creative collaboration. It is an approach to creating through the body, for soloists and performers in ensemble. It encourages risk, daring and originality through structured and improvisational physical exercises and performance scores.
Self-With-Others is a foundational training for performers in a whole range of disciplines – dancers, actors, circus performers, musicians, improvisors – as well as with those who teach others, or who use performance skills outside the domain of ‘professional performance’. Through its carefully constructed suite of principles and its improvisational and playful exploration of creative relationship, Self-With-Others offers a foundation for other performance languages; it will reinforce and provide rigor to your work, whether that work is through dance, theatre, clown, grotesque or any other expressive language. It offers emerging ensembles a shared language of principles and creative strategies, as they start their process of creating work.
Each morning of the workshop will involve training through Self-With-Others. The work is a joyous, physically demanding combination of exercises and improvisations.
Each afternoon – as soloists, duets, trios, small groups and as an ensemble – we will explore strategies for using Self-With-Others to create performance material. We’ll work both inside and in the surrounding landscape. We will share our work with each other and develop languages of constructive, developmental, positive feedback as we encourage each other to take greater risks and to dig deeper into our reserves of creative joy. We’ll do a lot of performing.
Though this is a stand-alone workshop, it will also offer a rich chance for those who have just completed the Intensive Devising Workshop to bring the different strands of that workshop into a shared, comprehensive approach to creative devising. As a foundational training, it is particularly useful for those looking for a shared language to bring diverse skills or performance languages together.
