Reflections of Students Over The Years

Photo 1

"The vast and profound understanding of personal theater that I obtained at the Barn is still resonating in a highly successful career in Canada with Jest in Time Theatre. I have endless memories of the Barn... For me, Celebration Barn was my home, and I lived in heaven."

"My initial journey in 1978 to Celebration Barn was a desperate search to find a teacher who could help me blend my love of the movement arts with realistic acting. Eighteen years later I clearly understand that the profound lesson I have been taught by my mentor goes much deeper than does any critique of my latest work... Through his guidance I have learned to appreciate the pure joy of creativity and the significance of inner strength through spirituality. I have witnessed the power and courage of making the commitment of life lived to its fullest..."

"Going to the Barn changed my life. I felt reborn there, died a few deaths there, met the funniest, dearest, most talented friends, became part of Tony's ensemble, married there, and learned to go beyond what I thought was possible..."

"Over the years, working at Celebration Barn has been like studying a painting. I keep discovering more detail and understanding of its beauty, mystery and power. It's been a blessing in my life. Thank you."

"The Barn was a great place to 'incubate'. Put twenty performers from around the world together in the Maine woods, mix vigorously day and night for truth in movement and improvisation, then fine tune the results in performance on the weekends. I loved being there and I'm glad to know new generations are continuing to discover themselves and create anew... a real center, a touchstone for actors and dancers who don't quite fit the mold, people who have a desire to shape their own material, a place to walk, think, work, relax, meet, debate, improvise, and find out what you have to say on stage."

"I have so many memories of The Barn, they are diverse, filled with people's faces, moments of great theater, good food, bad coffee, late nights and early mornings, cats, kids, and black flies. Tony created a place that was like a church is supposed to be - a place of deep searching, a place where risk and those who fail are picked up and encouraged to grow, a place where community and grace abound. The Barn for me was a spiritual place as well as a creative center, a place of growth, a place of intense personal struggle and discipline."
