Physical Comedy
with Davis Robinson
August 14 - 19, 2006
This workshop gives students a vocabulary for comic movement: trips, slaps, falls, escalations, stock characters, surprises, master/servant relationships, stillness, object encounters, and movement to music. These are used to build comic business and believable actions into scripted and original material.
Emphasis is placed on developing an individual's physical presence and their ability to recognize and build upon comic themes and variations.
We begin with neutrality and move through a series of solo, partner, and ensemble improvisations. Actors enrich their understanding of comic timing and the moment-to-moment logic of comic situations through daily exercises in material development. We try a lot of things, and we throw out a lot of things. Half-baked ideas and full-fledged peices are developed each day and performed in class each evening.
