How to Speak Shakespeare

This three-day workshop outlines a practical, uncomplicated system for speaking Shakespeare texts with intelligence, accuracy and passion. Equally accessible to students, professional actors, and teachers, it is based on Louis Colaianni and Cal Pritner's book How to Speak Shakespeare.




Participants use Shakespeare monologues and scenes to address the following:

     Identifying operative words
     Shakespeare's punctuation
     Eloquent, intelligent phrasing
     Shakespeare's figures of speech
     Contrasting and balancing words and phrases
     Knowing where to breathe
     Understanding Shakespeare's verse rhythms and syncopations
     Changing rhythms for clear story-telling
     Effective stress and inflection
     Expressing Shakespeare's big ideas
     Finding Shakespeare's hidden stage directions
